Cormorant & Egrets feeding together on the river Creuse.

Over the last week or so we've noticed two groups of Egrets hanging out on the Creuse here in Barrou.

I have found it difficult to get any decent shots because as soon as I start any sort of descent towards the river they're off! Tried to catch them in flight - this is them (you'll just have to take my word for it) behind 'Le Bourg' where I tried to sneak up on them from behind the trees - will never make a wild-life photographer!

Lately they have been joined by a Cormorant - the black blob to the right of the three white ones below.

Now if only I could take pics like Tim's!

  1. Thank you for the link!! That post was pure serendipity... one of the Black Storks that occasionally fly over between the forest at Preuilly and the one between GP and Barrou... decided to circle overhead to gain height. I never even noticed the daytime half-moon at the time... let alone the fact it was almost lined up!! It was only when I looked at them on the big screen, I found this one!!

Your egrets and cormorant are typical... it is winter, they tend to congregate, regardless of species... this is the time of year when crows will sit happily along side the buzzards that they have been mobbing all summer long!!

In the second picture, the bird on the left is a Great White Egret...and the other two are Little Egrets... when they take off, look for the yellow feet on the black legs. These are the birds that led to the formation of the society, initially of ladies, that became the RSPB!!

You could also see ducks, water rails, snipe and other "lake" species if the winter gets cold enough to freeze ponds.
