Church on sunday...Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais in Civaux

Our recent visit down to the Merovingian necropolis (MerovingianCemetery) in Civaux meant we also had the chance to visit one of the oldest churches in Poitou Charentes, Eglise Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais.

The facade of the church dates from the 11th/12th century when it was completed in its current form ...

but the earliest part, the aspe, dating from the 6th century

The interior of the church has been fully restored in a similar style to that of the nearby (16 kms north) church of Saint Pierre in Cauvigny. With very similar ornate capitals.

Liked the pews with little place name holders (I assume)

 Where's Joan?

To the side of the church archeological digs have revealed a baptistry (5th–7th century) built on the site of a former Roman shrine...testament to the sites religious importance over the centuries.
